Moore shines for Central
The only thing Patrick Moore failed to do for Central High in Saturday’s Victoryswap.com football jamboree was help the cheerleaders.
The quarterback/safety intercepted a pass, threw for 10 yards and rushed for 80, including the deciding 4-yard touchdown with 42 seconds to go in the Purple Pounders’ 12-7 victory over Silverdale Baptist Academy.
Moore is one of only five seniors on the team.
“We’re such a young team, so I’m proud of our guys for getting a win,” Central coach David Barger said. “I’m excited about it.”
Junior Jonathan Robinson gave Central a 6-0 lead with a 45-yard run on the team’s second possession.
Moore also ran down Seahawks tailback Tyler Barnett on a breakaway.
“Last year, we would have let him score,” Barger said.
The 57-yard run gave the Seahawks the ball on the 13, and senior Edgar Montgomery later scored from 5 yards. The extra point put Silverdale ahead.
Moore started the next drive with a 45-yard run. Then after runs by Robinson and Preston Womack, the quarterback jogged in for the go-ahead score.
David Brainerd found a new option for their 2008 offense in senior tailback Denzel Lowery, who had 93 yards rushing and the game’s only touchdown in a 6-0 victory over Chattanooga Christian, a new program.
“He did a good job running the ball,” David Brainerd coach Tawambi Settles said. “We like to throw the ball and haven’t really had a productive running attack before, but Denzel’s done a good job of working to get better, and it showed.”
Bradley Central and Tyner battled to a 7-all tie. Bears tailback Deonte Lindsey broke free on a 72-yard touchdown run, and Tyner responded with an 11-play drive capped by Michael Poarch’s 5-yard run.
“I like the way we battled back, took the ball downfield and scored,” Tyner coach Wayne Turner said. “It was a real gut-check; we need people to step up and answer the call, and they did.”
Bradley coach Damon Floyd wasn’t pleased with two turnovers by his team, but he liked the way his lines performed.
“We have a lot of experience up front and they did a good job,” he said.
Grace Academy pulled off the night’s upset, 7-6 over Hixson. Hixson’s Wildcats cruised downfield on their first drive, using only three plays before Kris Taylor scored on a 24-yard run, but the kick was missed.
The Golden Eagles came back downfield, using a 31-yard run by Cody Cross and a 17-yard run by quarterback Josh Blake to get to the 3. On third down, Blake found Caleb Rogers on a 1-yard scoring pass. Hunter Payton’s extra point proved to be the difference in the game.
The Cleveland Blue Raiders held off Howard 7-6. Cleveland went 67 yards in six plays in its first possession, sophomore Isaiah Nichols scoring from 6 yards.
The Hustlin’ Tigers got a score on their third drive. Michael Bryant hit Jahron Reynolds for a 36-yard gain on a third-and 20 play, and they hooked up again on an 11-yard score. Again, a missed extra point proved to be the difference in the game.
In the nightcap, McMinn County and Red Bank battled to a 7-all tie. McMinn scored early on a 7-yard run by Tevin McDermott, but the Lions’ Andy Christopher found Kelvin Clay wide open down the right sideline in the last two minutes, and the junior finished off a 90-yard score.
