Georgia getting healthier
The Georgia Bulldogs will be wearing their traditional red jerseys at home and their white jerseys on the road this football season, and there may be an occasion in which they break out the black.
Monday, however, Georgia coach Mark Richt was just happy to see fewer green noncontact jerseys in practice.
“There was a lot less green out there today,” Richt said. “I was pleased some guys got some work for the first time in a while.”
More than 20 players missed last Friday’s scrimmage, which was shortened by Bulldogs coaches, but the wounded count was closer to 15 Monday. Tailbacks Knowshon Moreno and Caleb King, receiver Mohamed Massaquoi and defensive tackle Kade Weston were among the more notable players still sidelined because of nagging injuries.
Returning to practice were senior linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and freshman receiver A.J. Green, who has two missed stints during camp because of a hip flexor.
“There is just that learning curve out there,” Richt said of Green. “There are a lot of nuances he’s got to get comfortable with, but it’s good to have him back.”
Said Green: “I really don’t think it has slowed me down that much.”
Monday marked the beginning of classes, so the top-ranked Bulldogs will be practicing just once daily from here on out. It also marked the start of preparation for the Aug. 30 opener against Georgia Southern.
When asked after practice about the offensive line, Richt said junior left guard Vince Vance and sophomore center Chris Davis have been the most consistent. Richt also complimented freshman Ben Jones, who is pushing Davis for playing time.
Sophomore Kiante Tripp began camp as the starting right tackle but continues to work a lot at left tackle following Trinton Sturdivant’s season-ending knee injury last Monday.
“I wouldn’t say he’s solidified it,” Richt said, “but he’s spending more time at left than right.”
As for special teams, freshman snapper Ty Frix is giving senior Bo Fowler a run for the starting job. Frix snapped and played linebacker last season at Calhoun High School.
“It’s not a done deal,” Richt said. “Frix is going to make this a competition.”
