Chattanooga: Pierce hot but Irish top Lions

Caleb Davis dropped his golf bag after shooting a 47 on the front nine at Moccasin Bend Golf Course and looked at Red Bank High School teammate Player Pierce.

“I need a black shirt too, man,” Davis said. “Can you get me one? A nice Adidas one?”

The black shirt and bucket hat look has been working the last four matches for Pierce, who shot a 3-under-par 33 in Tuesday’s nine holes against Notre Dame. It was his fourth consecutive match of par or better.

“I wore this shirt a few times and played real well in it, and I have a bet going with the guys that if one of them can shoot par, I’ll wear the team shirt with them,” said Pierce, who chipped in for birdie on No. 8. “Until then, I’ll keep wearing my lucky shirt. I’m waiting for one of them to catch up to me.”

Freshman Jake Keller came the closest Tuesday by shooting a 44.

Notre Dame easily won the match with an aggregate 151 to the Lions’ 170.

“The shirt might be the secret, and I might have to invest in one,” said Bradley Britt, who shot 49 for Red Bank.

Notre Dame junior Kyle Wittler and freshman David Weeks each shot 37 to keep the Irish undefeated in seven head-to-head matches.

“I’m fortunate enough to have nine boys that can play golf,” Irish coach Jeff Fisher said. “Some years you have a lot of talent and some years you don’t. I’m not going to complain at all.”
