Chattanooga: Shipman saves Brentwood win

Brentwood junior keeper Savannah Shipman made 10 saves in Wednesday’s Class AAA girls’ state soccer quarterfinal at Baylor, but none was bigger than the one that came in the 77th minute.

With her team clinging to a one-goal lead and fending off pressure from Collierville, Shipman dove to her left to stop a penalty kick and preserve a 1-0 victory.

“I’ve only ever seen her miss one PK,” Brentwood coach Mike Purcell said. “She’s just really quick, and she made the right move. She got her hand on it, and pulled it in. It was a great save. If that (PK) had happened, I don’t know what the result would have been. We were tired, and we were playing like we were tired.”

The goal for Brentwood (20-3-1) came nine minutes into the match, as Collierville cleared away a corner kick and Lady Bruins’ senior stopper Hannah Phillips was there to follow with a hard chip shot that gave Brentwood the early lead. Collierville (15-5-3) outshot the Lady Bruins 15-6, but could never get a ball by Shipman.

“I think it was a tale of two halves,” said Lady Dragons coach Bill Gillespie, whose team finished as runner-up the past two seasons. “In the second half, we were all over them; we just couldn’t put one in. Then we get a PK with three minutes left, and their keeper makes a save. What can you say except that it was just not in the cards for us today?”

The Lady Bruins will play in the semifinals today at 4:30 against Dobyns Bennett, which defeated Riverdale 1-0 in its tournament opener Wednesday. Keeper Lauren McInturff made 12 saves in the victory, and Tori Head provided the goal in the 31st minute on an assist from Katie Clark.

Franklin defeated Oak Ridge 3-0 to advance to today’s 7 p.m. semifinal against Siegel, which beat Houston 2-1 in the late game at Baylor. Siegel’s Kayla Ernst scored with under five seconds remaining to lead her team past Houston.

D-II tourney starts

The Division II state semifinals for Class A and AA begin this morning at GPS, with the winners advancing to Friday’s championship matches. In Class A, defending champion St. George’s takes on University School of Nashville at 11:30 a.m., followed by Davidson Academy’s match with Harding Academy.

Briarcrest will face Pope John Paul II in the first D-II AA semifinal, and Baylor and Father Ryan will play in the late match. Father Ryan earned its state berth with an upset over Evangelical Christian School in last Saturday’s substate, while the Lady Red Raiders overcame a slow start to defeat Brentwood Academy 6-1 in their quarterfinal.

“Hopefully going into our next game, we’ll be focused from the beginning,” Baylor coach Jimmy Weekley said.

The Lady Raiders (17-0-1) are ranked No. 1 in Division II as well as in the overall state rankings, and are currently No. 9 in the ESPN Fab 50 national poll. Baylor’s nine seniors are trying to earn the program’s seventh girls’ soccer state title and the first of their careers. They reached the championship match last season before falling to 2-1 to Battle Ground Academy.

“Our group of seniors is really close, and we’ve played together for a long time,” midfielder Caroline Scales said. “Not making it has been tough, especially knowing they’ve won it so many times in the past. Jimmy always says he wants every class at Baylor to have a state championship, and this is our last chance to get that.”
